DIY Play-Doh

My Boys LOVE Play-Doh, so I figured it may be fun to make our own. I found a Recipe online, and this is my first attempt at it.....

First you will need these items:

• 2 cups flour
• 2 cups water
• 2 tsp cream of tartar 
• 2 tbs of vegetable oil
• 1/2 cup of salt
• Kool-Aid or food coloring
• pan
• bowls
• spoons
• spatula
• as many cute little helpers as you can find! 

First you will mix the flour, water, cream of tartar, salt, and vegetable oil in a large bowl. Try to mix it well and get all the clumps out of it (my 3 year old Travis was the only one who really mixed it so mine came out clumpy).

James had to take a break from his school work to join us for a bit.

After you have mixed that up, either you can separate the mixture into separate bowl to have multiple colors, or you can make one batch of one color. This is the time you will be adding the Kool-Aid, or the food coloring. We chose Kool-Aid, the boys wanted it darker (it gets darker when you heat it up) so we added food coloring also. The Kool-Aid adds the fruity smell (which I did not enjoy).

This was the Grape flavored Kool-Aid

Grape again, we added 2 packets, it really only needed one, also added 2 drops of blue food coloring.

This was the Cherry Kool-Aid, also added red food coloring, it really only needs one packet of Kool-Aid

This had one fruit punch packet of Kool-Aid, plus 3 drops of green food coloring.

Turn your burner on medium heat, pour the mixture onto the pan just like a pancake, and you cna either cook it like a pancake and flip it, or mix it like scrambled eggs until it become more of a play-doh consistency. DO NOT BURN IT!!

Set it aside and let it cool!!!! Soon it will be ready to play with!!

James didn't like the way they smelled, and said it was sticky. But he still had lots of fun!!

 I have learned that Kool-Aid smells gross when it has been heated up, I learned that I need to help mix it all together, I learned that it was kinda sticky so my table was a pain to clean (I maybe didn't heat it for as long as I should have? or maybe didn't let it sit as long as I should have?), and I learned that red Kool-Aid is the hardest Kool-Aid coloring to clean off hands and surfaces. But in the end it was not an epic fail, we made a memory together, the boys had a new experience and so did I. Next time I will find some to make that I don't have to heat up.
